The 2600-series cars were delivered in a paint scheme which was a refined, simplified version of the previous 2400-series, with the red, white and blue accent confined to a simple belt rail stripe around the middle, supplemented with a Spirit of Chicago herald under the front side window. They kept this paint scheme until circa 2002.

The 2600-series cars were built by the Budd Company of Philadelphia, and delivered between 1981 and 1987. The order totaled 600 cars, comprising approximately half of CTA's railcar fleet.
